MATHS MASTERY Maths is taught using the ‘Maths Mastery’ method. Children are taught as a whole class. - This means learning is built upon something that has been previously learnt and embedded. Children are taught to reason about a concept and make connections. They learn concepts and procedures. They can reason and solve problems. We foster a ‘can do’, attitude. Not ‘I can’t do it’ … but ‘I cant do it yet. ’ To quote some of the children. ‘It helps my learning if I make a mistake’ I like doing problem solving because it is fun. ‘I like it when it is really hard and I have to figure out the answer. ’

Stem sentences The children repeat full sentences with sentence scaffolds to help with their understanding. For example: - 3 + 4 = ‘I start with 3. I add 4 more. I have 7 altogether. ’ 19 – 6 = 13 ‘I start with 19. I takeaway 6. I have 13 left. ’ Problem Solving and Reasoning The children have to apply what they have learnt and explain their thoughts in sentences. How do you know? Can you show me ? Prove it to me Can you show me a different way? Do you agree or disagree? What is the same? What is different? I agree because…

Maths Learning at Home One of the most valuable things you can do with

Maths Learning at Home One of the most valuable things you can do with your child is to talk to them about maths when at home or out shopping. • Singing number rhymes and songs like ‘One two buckle my shoe’ or ‘There were ten in the bed’. • Talking about how many knives and forks you will need to set the table, which glass will hold the most milk, what shapes they can see, pairing up socks, counting steps. • Playing games like ‘Snakes and Ladders’ or ‘Ludo’ that involve using dice and moving counters around the board. • Look for numbers in books, on posters, houses or cars. Homework is one of the many ways you can help your child develop confidence with maths. We will send home a range of different types of activities eg: maths games, investigations or puzzles and more formal written activities. Homework is linked to what your child has been learning in class. Your child will benefit by sharing their learning with you at home, especially using the right vocabulary and explaining how they find the answer.
