Newton's First Law of Motion: Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it. (The Law of Inertia) Newton's Second Law of Motion: The relationship between an object's mass m, its acceleration a, and the applied force F is F = ma. Newton's Third Law of Motion: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Sir Isaac Newton (1643 -1727) Age 84 A Newton is the measure of Force: 1 N = 1 (kg m) / s 2
Boltzmann found the temperature is a measure of the average energy of the particles. The ratio of the two is the Boltzmann’s constant, k. B Ludwig Boltzmann (1844 -1906) Age 62
Robert Brown, a Scottish Botanist, with his pioneering use of a new device called a microscope, is best known for his discovery that pollen grains have a random motion in water. This motion is now called Brownian Motion. The Random Motion of Particles Robert Brown (1773 -1858) Age 85 Brown’s Microscope
Colorado Springs Laboratory December 1899 In 1882, Tesla began working for the Continental Edison Company in France. In 1885, Tesla proposed that the Edison company should develop his ideas for alternating current (AC) transmission systems and motors, which was rejected. Thus starting the "War of Currents" Nikola Tesla (1856 -1943) Age 87 Wb V·s T= = m 2 1 Tesla = 10, 000 Gauss In 1886, Tesla formed his own company, Tesla Electric Light & Manufacturing. In 1887, Tesla started the Tesla Electric Company. In 1893, The "War of Currents" ended at Niagara Falls
Van de Graaff was the designer of the Van de Graaff generator, a device that produces high voltages by moving electrical charges from a high voltage source to a metal sphere by the means of moving insulating belts. In 1929 and with help from Nicholas Burke, Van de Graaff developed his first generator which producing 80, 000 volts. Robert Van de Graaff (1901 -1967) Age 65 By 1931, he constructed a much larger generator that generated 7 million volts.
"Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere. " – Albert Einstein 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for work on the Photoelectric Effect He is more known for his work on • Special relativity • Equivalence of matter and energy E = mc 2 "Everybody is a genius. " – Albert Einstein (1879 -1955) Age 76 "A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new. " – Albert Einstein
She was the very first woman to earn a doctorate degree in the field of physics within the United States. She got her degree in 1929 from New York University. Jenny Rosenthal Bramley 1909 - 1997
