Read the statements on the next slide, work as a group to decide if they are true or false. True or False?
TRUE FALSE Julian is only horrible to Auggie can stand up for himself Julian looks like a bully The other children are scared of Julian
Evidence • Now think of some evidence to support your decisions. • Watch the film again if you need to
Socially Distanced Class debate - Auggie shouldn’t go to school. Split the class into groups of 4 Each group will argue either For OR Against the statement Think of reasons to support your side of the argument
Informal Formal To make your argument sound better, sort these phrases in my opinion the way we see it is my first point we believe it is clear that I think you must see so no-one can deny firstly in addition also therefore consequently Use the formal phrases to structure your points
Use your planner to prepare your argument Reason One Why it is important or evidence? August should not go to school Reason Two OR Why it is important or evidence? August should go to school Reason Three Why it is important or evidence? Our Star Reason
Writing the Debate 1. Choose the best reasons for your side of the argument 2. Give each team member a reason to explain 3. Each team member writes the argument for 1 reason (so the paper doesn’t have to be shared) 4. Read through the presentation • Have you used formal language? (Edit it) • Is there anything you need to change or add? 5. Practise your speech together, taking turns to say one section each.
Presenting the Debate 1. Make sure you know who is going to say each section. Stand in the right order. 2. Don’t waste time between speakers, swap quickly so the presentation runs smoothly. 3. When it’s your turn • Look at the audience • Speak slowly, clearly and with expression • Don’t fidget 4. When it’s not your turn, fade into the background. • Look down or at the speaker • Don’t make any sound 5. If anything goes wrong, work as a team to sort it out.
After the debate When each team has spoken have a class vote to decide whether the class thinks August should go to school or not.
In the film clip Charlotte and Jack stick up for Auggie Transition Questions for Discussion Then Auggie sticks up for himself How did you feel then?
What issues would you speak up about? Going vegan Your beliefs Saving the planet Black lives matter Your own ideas School issues
In life, there will be times when you need to stand up for your self
Standing up for yourself What may make this hard?
Discussion What helps? What doesn’t help? Staying calm Getting angry Knowing what you want to say Missing the point Looking straight at someone Looking away Speaking clearly Mumbling
Have a go at disagreeing with a partner Remember you need to: • Stay calm Role play • Know what you want to say • Look straight at your partner • Speak clearly
