Women’s Studies Why prefer this term? -women’s history has been neglected by the academy -research has been conducted without the vantage point of women -women’s movement has brought on the realization, now academy needs to reflect it by creating this new field of study
Women’s Studies Why we should not call it gender studies? --Calling it Gender Studies means abandoning the study of women --The study of gender does not give equal weight to the two genders, but usually leans toward men, thinking them superior --Women are the only ones considered to be gendered; calling it gender studies will not change that
Gender Studies We need to address gender in relation to structural issues rather than personalities issues. Gender studies allow us to look at gender as a verb in terms of the interpersonal and societal practices that create or construct women’s and men’s behavior Women are not the only ones with gender; we need to bring men into the picture and hold them accountable
How about feminist studies Too confrontational Knowledge should not be partisan Feminism would be too narrow a field Some schools adopt Women and Feminist Studies
Combination(s) Calling it Women and Gender Studies would combine both an attention to women’s issues and gender as a category and a system As sexuality studies gained ground in the academy, more and more courses are in demand in the area of sexuality Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies is now the new combination term
