WJEC GCSE Food and Nutrition Unit 1 “In November, I stated my intention that Exams to be cancelled. November 2020 Unit 2 NEA’s to go ahead exams would be cancelled due to the significant disruption already experienced by learners. The proposals we later presented were designed to support learner wellbeing and progression, be responsive to future disruption, and were broadly well received by the education community. This document is intended to provide advice to teachers on how learners may work on or complete NEA at home, if the centre decides it is safe and practicable to do so. Centres are not required to seek permission from or notify WJEC at the point the arrangements are implemented. CDG`s to be used summer 2021 FAQ’s • Will we be given past papers and mark schemes to use? Yes • If learners cannot complete the assessment can we use past ones / mocks ? Yes • Can they do any work at home? Yes • If learners cannot complete the assessment at home, can we wait until they return ? Yes • Do we mark using the standard mark-schemes – yes as far as possible • Final timeline ? – TBC with DDAG

WJEC Level 1/2 Hospitality and Catering Summer Exams cancelled TAG`s Unit 1 Exam was available in January, summer 2021 cancelled -It`s highly recommended learners complete a past paper or internally designed test to evidence Knowledge and Understanding of this content. Unit 2 – It`s highly recommended the internal assessment is completed if possible * • 4 dishes proposed • 2 planned for • 1 cooked on the day of the final assessment/ Accompaniments can be added to increase skill levels. • Can be produced at home • Will not be moderated Can now complete at home *evidence of practical skill levels would support accurate final judgements of attainment – this could be “mock “ assessments, or dishes produced in lessons to avoid any learner being dis-advantaged by not accessing food lessons / food room or being unable to complete practical at home.

WJEC Level 3 Food Science and Nutrition Unit 1 summer exam cancelled Unit 2 will not be released May 1 st TAG`s FAQ’s • Do they need to sit past papers Unit 1 and Unit 2 ? It`s highly recommended that past papers / internally designed tests form evidence of attainment for Unit 1 (external) and Unit 2 • Can they do internal assessments / practical work at home? Yes this is now allowed • Do year 13 learners have to complete all 4 assessments to gain accreditation summer 2021 ? No, for the Diploma their TAG`s could be based solely on Unit 2 and 3 or 4, but judgements could be based on all units that have been attempted/ completed • Should we cash in – year 12 s, this summer – as long as learners have been taught the K and U for this unit and you have some evidence of attainment, yes, its recommended.

Technological advances • Researching new recipes/methods/ ingredients • On line ordering of meal boxes - aids preparation and good portion control • Using Aps to learn new food production skills Pandemic how this affects food choice Increase in Obesity • Energy imbalance • Education/working at home • Lack of opportunity for activity • Eating “treats” due to boredom Useful teaching points Lifestyle Changes • Improved “family meal times”, eating and cooking together • Walking, cycling, on line exercise activities • Less food waste – increase in preservation • Buying local – farm shops/home delivery • Revisiting traditional skills/dishes Improved nutritional intake • Less take aways/ready meals – reduction in income, more time for food to be prepared at home • Opportunity for new practical skills being developed- new dishes tried out by parents/carers and children • Less food on the run/more structure • Improved energy balance
