AS/A LEVEL ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE: SUBJECT CONTENT Learners are required to show knowledge of some of the different language levels below: • phonetics, phonology, prosodics: how speech sounds and effects are articulated analysed • lexis and semantics: the vocabulary of English, including historical, geographical, social and individual varieties of English • grammar including morphology: the structural patterns and shapes of English at sentence, clause, phrase and word level • pragmatics: the contextual aspects of language use • discourse: extended stretches of communication occurring in different genres, modes and contexts.
AS/A LEVEL ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE: SUBJECT CONTENT Learners are required to show knowledge of some of the different language levels below: • how language choices shape meanings in texts • ways in which individual texts are interpreted by different readers or listeners • how linguistic and literary approaches can inform interpretations of texts • ways in which texts relate to each other • the significance of contextual factors in the production and reception of texts.
ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES Learners must demonstrate their ability to: AO 1 Articulate informed, personal and creative responses to literary texts, using associated concepts and terminology, and coherent, accurate written expression AO 2 Analyse ways in which meanings are shaped in literary texts AO 3 Demonstrate understanding of the significance and influence of the contexts in which literary texts are written and received AO 4 Explore connections across literary texts AO 5 Explore literary texts informed by different interpretations.

Recognising and Rewarding Examiners’ Commitment Annually, 34, 000 examiners mark 8 million qualifications for 2 million 15 -19 years olds in England, Northern Ireland Wales. In 2016 the Examiner Capacity and Culture Working Group launched: • Two new award schemes to recognise exceptional individual examiners, and schools’ and colleges’ contributions to the profession, and. . . • A new website for teachers and school leaders interested in learning more about becoming an examiner and sharing best practice. The website hosts resources, case studies and useful materials for teachers, heads of department and schools leaders alike.
JCQ Award for examiners, moderators, exam setters From 2017, the JCQ award gives formal recognition to examiners, moderators and exam setters who have made a sustained contribution to examining (three or more years with one awarding organisation), and to encourage them to continue examining and/or moderating for several years. In future years, awards will be offered for five or more, and ten or more, consecutive years’ active examining service. Qualifying examiners will receive a letter and certificate recognising their services to examining, which can be added to their portfolio and include on their CV, providing evidence of the teacher’s commitment to ongoing CPD.

ONLINE EXAMINATION REVIEW Online Examination Review (OER) resources will be prepared throughout the Autumn term to exemplify candidate responses to the summer’s AS and A level question papers. Also available on the Eduqas website, are a range of marked exemplar of responses provided by centres.
A feedback module will look like this when opened.
You will find three responses for the examination questions set, a clean copy and an annotation version of each. The question paper and mark scheme are available on the site with the candidate responses for use in the classroom.
Making notes The pen tool allows the user to make notes on any part of the screen.
ITEM LEVEL DATA: WHAT IS IT FOR? For centres, it can be used to: • evaluate their own performance against specification norms; • identify strengths and weaknesses for a candidate cohort and suggest areas of improvement; • assist individual candidates in improving their own performance. www. wjecservices. co. uk

‘Centre Performance in Context’ is used to see how your centre performed relative to other centres with WJEC Eduqas. This gives (for each item) the mean, facility factor and attempt %, for all candidates as well as males and females separately.

ELC ENGLISH: summary of assessment Component 1 Written examination: 1 hour 25% of qualification 40 marks Section A: Non-literary Reading A mix of short answer questions, structured questions and multiple-choice questions in response to two or three short texts, including at least one noncontinuous text. Section B: Functional Writing One short and one extended writing task based on everyday uses of English. Externally set, externally assessed. Component 2 Topic Tests: 4 0. 5 hours 60% of qualification 80 marks Two reading tasks and two writing tasks focusing on applying skills in different contexts. Test 1: Response to twentieth/twenty-first century literature Test 2: Editing and sequencing Test 3: Narrative writing Test 4: Proofreading Externally set, internally assessed.
