WISER Key Search Tools Angela Carritt and Kate Petherbridge
Aims By the end of the session you should… • have been introduced to key resource finding tools • understand the difference between these tools • know how to log in to these resources, where this offers greater functionality • be able to search effectively across different types of library resources
Key search tools
Key search tools SOLO – Search Oxford Libraries Online (a new resource discovery tool) l OLIS – Oxford Libraries Information System (the library catalogue) l Ox. LIP+ - Oxford Libraries Information Platform (gateway to e-resources/databases) l l OU e-journals – Oxford University’s e-journal portal
Log in for greater functionality Some search tools allow you to log in or sign in. This can offer access to a greater range of resources or options.
Logging in to SOLO and OXLIP+ If you are a member of the University of Oxford, you can log on to these resources using your SINGLE SIGN ON (SSO) username and password. -These are the details used to access university webmail and to book courses through OUCS. Only University members can sign in to these resources.
Logging in to SOLO and OXLIP+ Logging into SOLO lets you: • Save searches and individual results to an e-Shelf between sessions(temporary use recommended). • Set alerts and preferences. • Gain remote access to external licensed resources- e. g e-books/ e-journals found through SOLO. • Tag and review items. Logging into Ox. LIP+ lets you: • Gain remote access to external licensed resources available through Ox. LIP+ (including databases and OU e-journals if accessed through Ox. LIP+) • Save searches, results and database sets
Logging in to OLIS All members of Oxford Libraries need to log in to OLIS to access their Patron Functions. These functions include • making and monitoring stack requests • renewing material • monitoring e. g. due dates and fines.
Logging in to OLIS To log on to OLIS, you use your Library barcode and password. This is NOT the SSO. The library barcode number is on your library card, next to the barcode. The password is set as default to your date of birth in a particular format. e. g. DOB = 01 January 1975 password=01 JAN 1975
Where do I start?
SOLO- What does it cover? SOLO searches across • • OLIS, the library catalogue (including e-journals and e-books) ORA, the Oxford Research Archive Bodleian Allegro Chinese Catalogue The titles of the e-resources accessed through Ox. LIP+ You can link from SOLO directly into results from these resources.
SOLO- Search Oxford Libraries Online • Basic search – keyword • Some limits can be applied to the basic search • material type • library (or set of libraries e. g. OULS) • Advanced search offers further ways to focus searching
