Requirements • Two steel APAs (Anode Plane Array) are need to be transported from Daresbury, Cheshire, to South Dakota, using various transport systems. In addition, the structure will be turned by 90° in order to go down a mineshaft 1 mile underground. • A system of Cavoflex anti vibration mounts will be needed in order to protect the APAs during transport. These are shown in the attached slides. • This is a preliminary enquiry, in order to establish what size of wire rope mount can be used. • There is a general requirement for the APA structure that it will not see any more than 4 g in any direction. APA Transport Frame Description • The Transport frame comprises of: (Quantities are per transport frame assembly) - APA Main steel Frame – 472 Kg – 1 off - APA 474 Kg each – 2 off - APA Mount Support Structure 110 Kg each – 4 off - Aluminium protective frame 90 Kg each – 2 off - Acrylic Panels 130 Kg - Total weight 2170 Kg • For your estimates, it will be the 474 Kg APA frame that will need the wire rope mount protection • Each APA is supported on two mount support structures, comprising 3 wire rope mounts per structure, giving in total 6 wire rope mounts per APA and 12 wire rope mounts for each transport frame assembly. 4 28 December 2021 APA Transport Frame wire rope mounts spec.

Proposed wire rope mount type • Wire rope mount in the design is based on a the one in the attached drawing. The most critical dimension is to keep the width to 100 mm or less. I would expect the mating surface to have M 8 or M 10 counterbored holes. 9 28 December 2021 APA Transport Frame wire rope mounts spec.

Following consultations with Tom Jones, Daresbury • Thomas Jones, Daresbury, was asked to review the AVMs • Suggested using a MIL Standard - MIL-STD-810 H • 7. 6 g 11 ms input in all 3 directions • 46 cm drop - Not achievable with the space constraints available - 4 g peak when exposed to a transit drop of at least 114 mm (which equates to an instantaneous velocity change of 1. 5 m/s) • Dimensional constraints - Vertical Top: 59. 5 mm - Vertical Bottom: 72. 2 mm - Horizontal: 65. 4 mm - Side to Side: 51. 5 • Suggestion that the mounts should be to the MIL standard was considered and understood but this could not be allowed due to restrictions in the space around the frame with regard to the transport frame. 19 28 December 2021 APA Transport Frame wire rope mounts spec.

New suggestion from AVM (R) 17/1/20 • Daniel Laws will be reviewing the AVMs

New suggestion from AVM (R) 17/1/20 • Daniel Laws will be reviewing the AVMs following our discussion • Current data has been suggested from ESA transport of satellites • for road, shock case 10 gx 10 ms (sawtooth) as per ESA standard, that is equal to a velocity pulse of 0, 5 m/s • for railway, shock cases 3 gx 30 ms (half-sine) for vertical and transversal axes (0, 6 m/s), and 5 gx 30 ms (half-sine) for longitudinal axis as per EN 61373 • for sea, to estimate max dynamic displacements of suspended mass are usually considered ship's max rotations due to rough sea (± 22, 5° - both athwartship and fore-and-aft) • The shock loads are less than 1. 5 m/s, but the 10 gx 10 ms is greater than the 7. 6 gx 11 m/s • Trip down the Ross shaft gives the greatest unknown - Does any existing data exist? • Further analysis using the new weights and constraints will be done in the next few weeks 20 28/12/2021 APA Shipping frame FEA
