Winnebago Way Update 10/4/10
Today’s Objectives: Connect process to school needs. Review the flowchart for managing behavior and when to record it. Model applying behavior process.
Connecting the process to school needs Need for consistency in gathering data to make it reliable and valid for usage when applying interventions. Supportive of SEL standards for decision making Supporting teachers in achieving D 15 Teaching Targets. Supporting a growth mindset
Supporting the D 15 Teaching Targets The evaluation process can seem daunting believe it or not use of this process can assist in some of the Domains: ◦ Domain 2 Classroom Environment: 2 a: I model and provide a risk-free learning environment where it is comfortable to make mistakes, learn from mistakes, and try again to be successful. 2 c: I clearly communicate routine classroom procedures. 2 d: I ensure standards of behaviors are clear to students and families…
Supporting the D 15 Teaching Targets cont… Domain 4: Professional Responsibilities ◦ 4 b: I collect, analyze, monitor and report data to track classroom and individual student growth and achievement over time.
Some reasons why we do positive redirects… Common language- our students come from diverse environments and may need multiple opportunities to be successful and even know what the expectations are Preserves emotion- redirects take the emotions away from the interaction. The redirect gives opportunity for student to make the choice rather than feel like they are being ‘judged’ as bad/good, right/wrong in front of their classmates Gives opportunity to practice correctly with guidance from teacher.
Our integrity checks account for: Stating expectations Providing a positive redirect that did not single student out among peers Explicitly stated expectation to student if behavior was not corrected Offered opportunity for guided practice of behavior prior to ‘going to yellow’ These are embedded in our Winnebago Way Flow Chart process Winnebago. Way. Flow. Chart. Updated 8. 11[2]. do cx
How does our whole school positive redirect support promote these messages from Mindsets in the Classroom? Pg. 69 “It is imperative that teachers develop a climate in their classroom where failure is celebrated and students learn to reflect and redirect so that they can approach a challenging task in a new way or with more effort. ” Pg. 70 “Our goal is to encourage students to internalize the belief that their own actions and behaviors not external factors, guide them to achievement or failure. ” Pg. 72 “Being guided by self-determination, while engaged in an activity, results in optimal motivation levels. It is further postulated that people are more self-determined when they feel a sense of autonomy in their pursuits, rather than when they feel their pursuits are controlled through coercion, external rewards, or guilt/shame avoidance. ”
