William Powell Frith nasceu em Aldfield, North Yorkshire, em 19 de janeiro de 1819. Foi um pintor inglês especialista em retratos e narrativas da “Era Vitoriana”. Em março de 1835, Frith embarcou na diligência para Londres, acompanhado por seu pai e carregando uma grande carteira de seus desenhos. Iniciou seus estudos formais de Arte na “Sass's Academy”, em Charlotte Street. Suas primeiras pinturas eram principalmente do gênero histórico. Frith tornou-se parte de um grupo de artistas pouco mais jovens, que se chamavam "The Clique". Em 1837 ingressou na “Royal Academy Schools” e foi eleito membro pleno em 1852. Frith casou-se com Isabelle e tiveram doze filhos. Após a morte de Isabelle, em 1880, ele se casou com sua amante, Mary Alford com quem já tinha sete filhos. Em 1890 retirou-se da Academia, mas continuou expondo até 1902. Morreu em Londres, em 9 de novembro de 1909. Sua obra é encontrada na coleção de várias instituições britânicas, incluindo “Derby Art Gallery”, “Sheffield”, “Harrogate” e “Victoria and Albert Museum”, entre outras.

Biography: William Powell Frith was born in Aldfield, North Yorkshire, on January 19, 1819.

Biography: William Powell Frith was born in Aldfield, North Yorkshire, on January 19, 1819. He was an English painter, specialized in portraits and in narratives of the “Victorian Era”. In March 1935, he embarked with his father in a stagecoach to London, taking with him a large portfolio of his drawings. He began his formal studies at the “Sass’s Academy”, in Charlotte Street. His early paintings were, chiefly, about the Historical genre. He became part of a group of slightly younger artists, who called themselves “The Clique”. In 1837 he joined the “Royal Academy Schools” and was elected full member in 1852. Frith married Isabelle and had twelve children. After the death of Isabelle, in 1880, he married his mistress, Mary Alford, with whom he already had seven children. In 1880, he retired from the Academy, but he continued his exhibitions until 1902. Frith died in London, on November 9, 1909. His work is found in the collection of several British institutions, including “Derby Art Gallery”, “Sheffield”, “Harrogate” and “Victoria and Albert Museum”, among others. The Trysting Place, 1884
