Benchmark 5 Encounters with employers & employees All pupils should have encounters with employers and employees that result in a better understanding of the workplace and the potential career paths open to them. All/the overwhelming majority of pupils have at least one meaningful encounter with an employer every year they are at your school What Good looks like Every student should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. ● ● Students should participate in at least one meaningful encounter with an employer every year between years 7 -13. Work with your regional LEP to make sure you are aligning to the strategic economic plan of the region.
During Years 7, 8 and 9 During years 7, 8 and 9 students are exposed to many careers based learning experiences. These have included: ● ● ● Use of online interactive tools to plot possible career paths Curriculum days that simulate industry and the world of work - specifically ‘Dragons Den’ Careers Networking allowing encounters with employers Pathways choices for GCSE subjects, which in some cases, has included careers appointments Work skills days focusing on workshops from people from industry
In Year 10. . . During this year the focus shifts to a more personal approach for the individuals. Provision includes: ● ● ● Careers Fair - an opportunity to talk to colleges and people from industry in a more informal yet more directed manner Opportunity for some select students to attend Further and Higher education Fairs at local colleges Moral and Social Studies curriculum designed to aid CV and application letter writing Practice interviews with external people from industry College taster days - Opportunities to experience local colleges Experience of a Workplace
And on to Year 11 In Year 11 the focus turns to the immediate next steps. Activities include: ● ● ● College assemblies from the majority of local establishments Revisiting the careers fair with a much more refined approach Tutor time activities centred around college/next step/course selection and application Facilitating and supporting college interviews - at Wildern and elsewhere On top of all of this, each student in Year 11 will have at least one 1 hour meeting with our independent careers advisor, to discuss college, employment and next steps
The next steps. . . As we are always trying to improve the provision we provide, the next steps are. . ● ● ● Careers Lunches which will involve a specific person from industry giving an informal talk on their career ‘Careers Champions’ Tracked progression through the whole of the Careers curriculum for all ○ If a student misses a Y 8 collapsed day, we need to know and act upon it Use of Pathways data to better understand student’s interests and pinpoint interventions and activities for these particular individuals Improvement on our online facility, providing a central area for students of all ages to access resources at all times
