What is a PLC? ● Defined as “an ongoing process in which educators work collaboratively in recurring cycles of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve. ” Learning by Doing Du. Four et al. , 2010 6

4 Questions of a PLC ● What do we expect our students to learn? ● How will we know if they’ve learned it? ● How will we respond if they don’t learn it? ● How will we respond and enrich if they already know it? 7

Question 1: What do we want students to know and be able to do? ● Learning Outcomes ○ What do the standards expect of students? ○ What specific knowledge, skills and dispositions do they need to accomplish this learning? 8

SB 1 (2017) Standards Revision Requirements The standards revision to the content standards shall: ● Focus on critical knowledge, skills and capacities needed for success in the global economy; ● Results in fewer, but more in-depth standards to facilitate mastery learning; ● Communicate expectations more clearly and concisely to teachers, parents, students and citizens; ● Be based on evidence-based research; ● Consider international benchmarks; and ● Ensure that the standards are aligned from elementary to high school to post-secondary education so that students can be successful at each education level. 9
