WHY DOES TIME MOVE FASTER IN SPACE THAN WHEN YOU’RE ON EARTH? By : Sahir Makhani
Roadmap ■ Time dilation effects – Gravitational time dilation – Velocity time dilation – How they work together ■ Light years and speed of light ■ Time travel ■ Everyday use and improvements to humanity
Time dilation effects
Time dilation effects ■ Time dilation is the slowing down of time due to traveling high speeds ■ Time is relative depending on your position and your speed ■ Time relativity makes time move slower for a moving clock than for a stationary clock ■ The difference in distance from the ground and speed make time move at a different pace ■ Time dilation happens at low speeds but is more noticeable when an object is moving closer to the speed of light ■ 2 main effects – gravitational time dilation and velocity time dilation
Gravitational time dilation ■ Occurs because of being a different distances from a gravitational mass ■ The closer you are, the slower your perception of time goes ■ Time appears to move slower near massive objects because the gravitational force bends spacetime ■ As gravity increases, time moves slower for you
Velocity time dilation ■ A factor where time moves slower as you move. ■ Time for you always moves at a steady pace but for observers, their perception of time would be slower if they were watching you move fast rate as they stand still.
Example of people on ISS ■ People on the international space station age slower than us on earth by 0. 01 seconds every year ■ Gravitational pull is weaker which speeds up the aging process for humans which is because of gravitational time dilation ■ They also spin around the earth at 5 miles a second which slows down the aging process, this happens because of velocity time dilation ■ Velocity time dilation’s effect on the people on the ISS is stronger than the effect of the gravitational time dilation effect which is why they age slower than us on earth

Light years and time travel
Light years ■ A unit of astronomical distance which is equivalent to the distance light travels in a year ■ Shows an object as it was that many years ago ■ Light years represent how long it takes for light to reach somewhere ■ Could traveling at the speed of light lead to time travel? ■ Using telescopes to see far galaxies that are billions of light years away could help us learn more about history and time travel
How to calculate a light year ■ Light year = (speed of light in km) x (one year in seconds) ■d=cxt ■ d = (3. 00 x 105) x (3. 154 x 107 seconds) ■ d = 9. 46 x 1012 ■ d = 9. 5 trillion kilometers.
Time travel ■ Concept of time > time alteration > time travel > timelines ■ Moving to the past ■ Moving to the future ■ Einstein’s theory of gravity unites space ad time to create spacetime ■ Spacetime can be wrapped by matter and energy and curve in the presence of mass which results in the creation of wormholes ■ Wormholes are tunnels which connect distant parts of the universe ■ If the mouths of the wormholes are relative then there is also the possibility that it could take you to a different point in time
Ideas for everyday use ■ We can probably use the speed of light to invent new machinery and make life more efficient. We could use it in our everyday lives with transport, speed up research for diseases, space travel, dig deeper in earth, time travel. Maybe even use the speed to create a type of energy which could power machines using lots of energy. ■ Side effects - you make aging faster from the perspective of everyone around you but you still experience your full life.
In Conclusion… ■ I believe that it would be possible for us to figure out how to manipulate time and travel through time with the use of speed of light and using the logic behind time dilation and maybe even find a way to manipulate time or live longer ■ I think that we could use the speed of light in our every day lives which will impact everyone as an energy source or even for something as simple as transportation but so far we have not accomplished our goal of traveling at the speed of light so everything is just theoretical but has a great chance of helping mankind accomplish things that will change the way we live forever.
Some more questions ■ Is there any way to use the speed of light to move more efficiently on earth? ■ How can we use this to travel to far away universes without aging too much and being back on earth before everyone else ages too much? ■ Can we make a machine powerful enough to use the energy and travel at the speed of light? ■ How can we use time dilation even farther to see into the future or maneuver time?
