Why do some kids have freckles? • People with light skin have less melanin, A chemical in the skin that protect it from the sun damage by reflecting and absorbing ultraviolet. • But some melanocytes (the melanin-producing cells) make more melanin when exposed to the sun.
What causes freckles? • Freckles appear when the melanin, the dark pigment in skin , isn’t distributed evenly. • Certain areas of the skin has more than others, and that’s why they appear a little darker.
What types of freckles are there? • There are two basic types of freckles simple freckles and sunburn freckles. • Simple freckles are usually tan, round and small about the size of a common nail head. • Sunburn freckles are often darker , have irregular jade borders and may be lager than a pencil eraser.
What are freckles? • Freckles are flat, tanned circular spots that typically are the size of the head of a common nail. • The spots are multiple and may develop on sun-exposed skin after repeated exposure to sunlight. • These are particularly common in people of fair complexion on upper body skin areas like cheeks, nose, arms and upper shoulders. They may appear on people as young as 1 or 2 years old.
Are people born with freckles? • Some people are born with freckles while others develop them as they get older. Sometimes when a person is exposed to too much sun, his or hers skin will react by forming freckles.
