French Colony • New France: Entire Mississippi Valley as Louisiana – 1608: Samuel De Champlain established Quebec – French Population did not grow • 70000 compared to 1, 000 in British colonies – French had friendlier relations with the native Americans – Many French married Native American women – They created trade & military alliances.
Colonial Rivalry • 1754: War Broke out between Britain and France [French and Indian War] • George Washington participated in the battle • Britain lost initially • William Pitt’s leadership and Iroquois help, helped Britain win finally • War ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1763
Colonial Rivalry • Native Americans took up arms under Ottawa Chief Pontiac in 1763 • Natives captured 8 British forts • British infected the natives with small pox • Finally Natives settled with treaties losing their land, after being worn out by disease & war. • Proclamation Act 1763 to avoid problem with Native Americans
British Problems with Colonists • Proclamation Act 1763 – Banned all settlement west of Appalachians. – British could not enforce the law
• Problems Resulting from French-Indian Wars – Britain became indebted. – Stationed 10, 000 soldiers – colonists did not like it. – George Grenville imposed Sugar Act in 1764, which angered the colonists • Halved the duty on foreign made molasses • Placed duties on certain imports • Strengthen the enforcement of law - viceadmiralty
