Task Fortune Line +3 +2 +1 June 1066: King Harold’s army is waiting in Kent and Sussex for Duke William of Normandy’s army to arrive. September 17: Hardraada and Tostig sail from Norway to England. +5 +4 January 1066: King Harold’s brother, Tostig, decides to fight for Hardrada. Have a look at these events. Explain how each of the candidates is feeling and why! September 20: Hardraada’s army arrives in the North of England. King Harold is over 200 miles away in the south and he had sent many soldiers and sailors home. September 20: Hardraada’s army destroy a small English army at the Battle of Gate Fulford. September 25: Hardraada and Tostig are killed in the fighting. The Viking army is defeated. September 26: The surviving Vikings make peace with King Harold and sail back to Norway. September 28: Duke William lands at Pevensey in East Sussex. King Harold is told and decides to march his tired army the 200 miles back to fight the Normans and leaves many of his archers in the North.
