Resume of the Chief Priests • High ranking members of the Jewish priesthood; Saducees • Many served on the Sanhedrin Court • In charge of the Temple worship • Had little to do with the common man, but were instead tied to the aristocracy
Matthew 21: 14 -16 Then the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant 16 and said to Him, “Do You hear what these are saying? ” NEXT: CAIAPHAS
Resume of Caiaphas • Officially served as High Priest from AD 18 -36 • Son-in-law of Annas • The term “High Priest” might simply be a designation for the leader of the Sanhedrin Court
John 11: 49 -50 And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish. ” After Lazarus was raised from the dead.
Matthew 26: 3 Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4 and plotted to take Jesus by trickery and kill Him.
Matthew 26: 57, 59 And those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. 59 Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, 60 but found none. Matthew 26: 14 -16 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you? ” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. 16 So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.
Matthew 26: 47 -49 And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him. ” 49 Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed Him. But Peter followed at a distance. 55 Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56 And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him. ” 57 But he denied Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him. ”
Luke 22: 58 -59 And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them. ” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59 Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean. ”
Luke 22: 60 -61 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times. ” NEXT: ANNAS
Resume of Annas • Officially served as High Priest from AD 6 -15 • Removed by the Romans from his position, but still had great political influence • Five of his sons served as High Priest, as well as his son-in-law Caiaphas • Temple tables were known locally as the “booths of the sons of Annas”
Matthew 21: 12 -13 Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer, ’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves. ’” This occurred earlier in the week!
John 18: 12 -13 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in -law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year.
John 18: 19 -21 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine. 20 Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said. ”
John 18: 22 -24 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that? ” 23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me? ” 24 Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. Luke 22: 66 -69 As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, 67 “If You are the Christ, tell us. ” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe. 68 And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go. 69 Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God. ”
Matthew 26: 62 -64 And the high priest arose and said to Him, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You? ” 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, “I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!” 64 Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. ” NEXT: PILATE

Matthew 27: 1 -2 When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. 2 And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
Matthew 27: 24 -25 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it. ” 25 And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and on our children. ” NEXT: HEROD

Luke 23: 7 -9 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. 7 And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
Luke 23: 11 Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.
Luke 23: 13 -15 Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14 said to them, “You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; 15 no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him.
Mark 15: 15 So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.
