What is Product Conformity Assessment (PCA) n PCA is a solution designed to ensure that products meet the specific requirements set by a regulatory authority in the importing country, normally represented by the country’s national standards body n SGS have PCA contracts with Algeria, Burundi, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Kuwait, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, Uganda & Zanzibar to verify compliance of products in country of supply prior to shipment n These checks are normally done through product tests and/or reviews of existing test reports n Other critical checks are done during physical inspection, such as labels and marking requirements, shelf life information, consumer information / instructions, etc. 2
Product Conformity Assessment (PCA) n The typical conformity items being checked on products concern the overall safety (e. g. lead on toys), human health impact (e. g. heavy metals in food) and environmental effect (non-CFC goods) n Exporters have challenges to submit test reports which comply with the testing requirements / parameters of the importing country n Example, packaging (plastic materials and articles) intended for food contact requires overall migration testing, this is to ensure that no chemicals will migrate into the actual food in the bags n The scary part of one particular case is that the manufacturer (of plastic food packaging) did not know what a migration test was 3
