Who is Charles Babbage what did he do
Who is Charles Babbage, what did he do and how has he affected the realm of Information Systems. Where do you see his influence today?
Scope 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. About Charles Babbage Difference Engine No. 1 Analytical Engine Difference Engine No. 2 Charles Babbage in Modern Era Conclusion
Who was he? - Mathematician, - Inventor - Philosopher - Mechanical engineer (1791 - 1871) “Father of Computing"
Biography Charles Babbage 1791 - was born on 26 December, London, England 1814 - married Georgina Whitemore at the age of 23, 1827 – Wife died at the age of 35 1832 - published "Economy of Manufactures and Machinery" 1842 - published "Sketch of the Analytical Engine" 1864 - published "Passages from the Life of a Philosopher" 1871 - died on 18 October in London, England
Career Milestones 1816 1820 1821 1827 1832 - Founded the Astronomical Society - Founded the Analytical Society - Began work on the Difference Engine - Published a table of logarithms from 1 to 108000 - British government suspended funding for his Difference Engine 1834 - Began work on the Analytical Engine 1837 - Conceptual design for Analytical Engine completed 1842 - Begins work & designing the Difference Engine No. 2 1856 - design of the Analytical Engine completed, uses Jacquard's punch card idea for programming
Difference Engine No. 1 (1821) Calculator - to calculate a series of values and print results automatically in a table.
Analytical Engine (1834) General-purpose programmable computing engine
Difference Engine No. 2 (1842 - 1849) An improved version of the original. The design was 1/3 of the parts from Difference Engine No. 1, while providing similar computing power.
1821 “Difference Engine No. 1” Calculator (Addition & subtraction only) All 3 models designs 1834 were completed however they “Analytical Engine” were physically partially Calculator & General completed Purpose Programming None of Babbage's designs (Addition, Subtraction, was physically realized in his Multiplication & division) lifetime - WHY? 1842 - 1849 “Difference Engine No. 2” (Improved version and a combination of Engine No. 1 & Analytical Engine)
Why Charles Babbage never completed his 3 engines 1. Victorian mechanical engineering were not sufficiently developed to produce parts with sufficient precision. 2. Lack of funding 3. Personality Differences
1821 “Difference Engine No. 1” Calculator (Addition & subtraction only) 2012 Calculators are pre-designed with specific functions such as addition, multiplication, and logarithms built in
1842 - 1849 “Difference Engine No. 2” (Improved version and a combination of Engine No. 1 & Analytical Engine) 2012 A computer is a programmable machine designed to carry out a sequence of arithmetic or logical operations
Conclusion How has Charles Babbage invention affected the realms of information Systems? - his invention has made IS possible - IS an essential and integral part of our lives that we cannot imagine a life without it
