Whittling Chip What is the Whittling Chip? The Whittling Chip is a certification that grants a Bear Scout the right to carry and use a pocketknife. The Scout must show his Scout leader, or someone designated by his leader, that he understands his responsibility. Earning the Whittling Chip satisfies requirement #2 of the Bear Claws adventure, which is required to earn the Bear Rank. Requirements to earn the Whittling Chip are: to do the following: 1) Know the safety rules for handling a knife and show, using these rules, that you know how to care for and use your pocketknife safely. 2) Make a carving with a pocketknife. Work with your den leader or other adult when doing this. 3) Read, understand promise to abide by the “Pocketknife Pledge. ” 3
Requirement #1: Knife Safety rules for handling a knife. • • A knife is a tool, not a toy. Know how to sharpen a knife. A sharp knife is safer because it is less likely to slip and cut you. Illustration. Keep the blade clean. Never carry an open pocketknife. When you are not using your knife, close it and put it away. Keep your knife dry. When you are using the cutting blade, do not try to make big shavings or chips. Easy does it. Make a safety circle: Before you pick up your knife to use it, stretch your arm out and turn in a circle. If you can't touch anyone else, it is safe to use your knife. 4
Reqirement #1: How Sharp is your knife? Checking for Sharpness A sharp knife is a safe knife to use as a tool for projects, whittling designs out of wood, soap or other soft materials. Here are 3 ways to check the sharpness of your knife with your den leader, parent or supervising adult. • • Preferred method: Shine a bright light on the sharpened edge. A dull edge will reflect light. A razor-sharp knife will cleanly slice paper. Parents or leaders please show the Scout(s) how to drag the edge lightly across your thumbnail. The blade should scrape the nail cleanly, without chattering. Please watch this video about safety and seeing how to sharpen a knife: https: //youtu. be/Ks 8 p. VWR_-Zg – watch this video and count the rules you see. • PARENTS: Please have your Scout watch this video 2 x minimum to reinforce the rules of safety! 5
Requirement #1: Your Knife and How to Use it Knife safety and whittling starts with knowing how to hold your knife and your object that you will whittle. Watch the below video from our Cub Scout friends and Mr. Kory • Please pay attention to his hand holds and movements. • We will also learn about different knives in this video https: //youtu. be/SSp. Requirment #1: Awareness and “THANK YOU” When you receive a knife or pass a knife to someone, remember to maintain EYE CONTACT and remember the “THANK YOU RULE” 1. Prior to receiving a knife or passing it to another Scout, remember to make sure the knife is closed. 2. Always maintain eye contact with the person receiving the knife. 3. DO NOT LET GO of your knife without the person saying THANK YOU. This thank you, means that they understand that they are receiving the knife SAFELY! 7
Requirement #2: Carving How to Make a Carving For this exercise, we will use a plastic knife that you would use at a picnic. You will also use a bar of soap to make your design. Parents please supervise your Bear before, during and after the exercise. – Find a safe spot to begin – Outline your design with the point of a pen or pencil – you can carve your name, an animal, sports logo, etc. – Ensure that your hands are in the proper position – Keep your knife blade away from your body – When you are finished place your knife on the table for your parent to collect 8
