Scholarships are awarded for many reasons. Academic Excellence Superior Test Scores Outstanding Achievement in Clubs, Organizations & Activities Character & Responsibility Service to School & Community Resilience, Perseverance, Special Challenges College Major & School Financial Need Read the Scholarship Handbook to learn about the selection criteria for each award before applying. 5

Application Forms Choose the Proper Application Forms WHS Common Application used for most local & area scholarships. Special Applications used for a few local & area awards. 13
WHS Common Application : A Word document found on the Student Services Website under “Scholarships” Microsoft Word must be loaded on your computer. 14
Turn to Page 9 Scholarship Application Request Form Note the Three Sections Section I scholarships use the WHS Common Scholarship Application. The Faculty Scholarship Committee will select recipients for all of these awards. *Turn in one copy and name it “Faculty Scholarships”. 15

Section II Scholarships Page 9 Use the WHS Common Scholarship Application. Outside Organizations Choose the Recipient WHS Mails Each Application Turn in ONE COPY for EACH SCHOLARSHIP. Each Common Application will have a different scholarship title in the heading. 17
Section III Scholarships Page 10 Use Special Scholarship Applications. They are all different and must be completed separately. Notice the special instructions! Turn in one copy of each special scholarship application. See Mrs. Levine for a copy of these applications in the Student Services Office 18
Quality Counts Complete Scholarship Applications. Create a well-written application for each scholarship that is an accurate reflection of your accomplishments. Make each application sound unique and address the specific criteria for selection! Quality counts now more than ever! 19
Tips for Writing Quality Scholarship Applications Follow directions. Understand the criteria for selection. Provide well-written & meaningful responses. Answer the questions accurately & honestly. Be interesting & concise. Check & double check grammar & spelling. Typed applications are preferred. 20
Resume Print a copy of your Resume (2 page maximum back to back) Staple to the Back of each Scholarship Application Include years of your college & career objective, skills, education, awards & honors, & years of participation in activities & organizations with dates. Along with a summary of leadership experiences, include your work history & examples of service projects that have had special significance to you & how your work benefited the school & community. 21
Financial Need List factors that influenced your financial need and how you plan to finance your education. Comment on sources of financial aid including support from your parents, loans, money saved, scholarships already earned & any unusual circumstances that would demonstrate your need. It can be difficult to determine the extent of a student’s financial need so please elaborate as much as possible. 22
Proof Have Someone Proof Read Your Scholarship Application. Assistance is available in the LMC Tuesday Thursday between 3: 15 - 4: 30 p. m. 23
SAVE PAPER Make sure your responses are concise, interesting & unique for each scholarship you are applying for! Print applications back to save paper. 24

Special Note Seniors applying for scholarships should not call or communicate with sponsors in the local and area competition to seek an advantage in the decision making process. Scholarship committees work very hard to make fair and honest decisions regarding scholarship awards and use the application process to help them in this endeavor. 31

The Importance of Gratitude Winning a scholarship is an honor, not an entitlement. Send a thoughtful thank you note for each scholarship you receive before graduation in June. Name & addresses of scholarship sponsors will be distributed with other information at Scholarship Night. 37
Payment of Scholarship Follow directions provided at Scholarship Night. Most scholarships require students to send proof of “successful completion” of college coursework or “proof of enrollment” during the first or second semester of the freshman year in college. 38

Scholarship Payments The WHS scholarship program is a REIMBURSABLE system. Payments will be made in a timely manner after you send proper documentation to the scholarship contact person. 43
