The other ones such as, past perfect continuous, past simple, present perfect continuous, present continuous and present simple… wow, such a long list… they are only time references, i. e. they place us at some point in time. The meaning of verbs and other words also help you use one or the other. EXAMPLE… Immediately panic BROKE OUT/WAS BREAKING OUT As panic just happens and it is not sustained in time, “broke out” (past simple) is chosen and “was breaking out” (past continuous) is left aside.
