Where Did the Word Cell Come From Robert
Where Did the Word “Cell” Come From? Robert Hooke: English Scientist. Came up with the word cell. Antoni van Leeuwenhoek: Discovered many microorganisms that could not be seen with the naked eye. Showed that there is more to our world than what you can see with the naked eye.
Living Things Share Many Characteristics 7 Characteristics of life: All Living Things… 1) Are made up of one or more cells 2) Respire (breathe) 3) Require Energy 4) Respond to stimuli 5) Grow and Develop 6) Reproduce 7) Excrete (get rid of wastes)

1) 2) 3) All living things are composed of cells Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things All cells are produced from other cells.
Cell Membrane: “Controllable gateway” that controls what substances come into and out of a cell. Cytoplasm: Liquid- like substance inside the cell. Contains the nucleus and other cell structures. Nucleus: “command centre” that directs all of the cell’s activity. Mitochondria: Powerhouse of the cell. Converts energy from food into a useable form of energy. Vacuoles: Small cavities that store food, water, and other materials needed by the cell.
Chloroplasts: Gives leaves their green colour. The site of photosynthesis within the cell. Central Vacuole: Stores water and other materials, and holds pressure in the cell. Cell Wall: Rigid layer surrounding plant cells on the outside of the cell membrane. Provides protection and strength.
Endoplasmic Reticulum: Performs many roles in the cell (example: protein synthesis). Ribosomes: Site of protein synthesis. Golgi Apparatus: Collect, sort, package, and transport proteins to where they are needed. Lysosomes: Function as the digestive system within the cell.
