What’s new in OSG 1. 2? Alain Roy Marco Mambelli
Goals for OSG 1. 2 • Main goal: fix essential problems before LHC restart. Sub goals: Improve ability to upgrade Essential software upgrades • Not goals: Architectural changes Major software updates • OSG 1. 2 development time was limited: we couldn’t make big changes August 2009 OSG Site Admin Meeting 2
Ability to add platforms • Problem: Pacman decides a package needs an update when anything “interesting” changes in the Pacman file (which describes the package). If we add a platform, nearly all Pacman packages change. Doing an “update” in an existing installation will reinstall nearly everything (exposing all bugs in update process). • Solution in OSG 1. 2: New version of Pacman (with code from VDT) allows us to control when Pacman decides to do upgrade. It’s now easy to add a new platform without an update confusing existing installations. • Ramifications We can add new platforms more easily. You must use a new version of Pacman (3. 28). New VDT Updater • Problem: We must be able to supply incremental updates. In OSG 1. 0, process of incremental updates way to hard—most people skipped them. • Solution: The vdt-updater handles the process for you. (Actually introduced late in OSG 1. 0) • Notes: The vdt-updater is much better than the old, byhand process. But it isn’t perfect yet. We’re working hard to make it much better. Major software updates • Now support Debian 5 (Needed by LIGO) • New version of RSV New probes New update mechanism • Network tools for diagnosing problems Hands-on session this afternoon • d. Some picky details (If you care) • Dropped My. SQL 4, jus use My. SQL 5 • No VDT “question” system • My. Proxy package split into client/server packages • Simpler way to install CA certificates: vdtca-manage. • Must run vdt-post-install after installation. • CRLs updated every 6 hours, not 24 • Several small software updates: details on VDT web site.
