‘What’s done, is done, ’ Year 13 Monday 30 th November
5 minute prep • Present your section of last week’s work – 9 sections.
After the grotesquely comic scene with the Porter, what will follow? • Make your predictions (3 minutes) • • Malcom and Donaldbain? Banquo and Fleance? Macbeth? Lady Macbeth?
Reading Act 3 • Focus: • How does Lady Macbeth react to Macbeth’s behaviour? • How is Macbeth affected by the unfolding action?
Darkness • Scene 1: • “I must become a borrower of the night • For a dark hour or twain. ” • (Lines 26 -27) • This gives a significant imagery of night and darkness, but also symbolizes hiding and distancing oneself from a conflict. This is because Banquo does not want to entangle himself in the conflict between Macbeth and his opponents. • “Of the dark hour, resolve yourselves apart. ” • (Line 137) • Reference to dark and evil, since Macbeth is sending assassins to murder Banquo (which is why he “borrows the dark, he submerges himself into an unknown/unfamiliar situation that seems dangerous).
Nature and Predators • “Do you find • Your patience so predominant in your nature • That you can let this go? ” • (Lines 85 -87) • A symbol of human nature and human reaction to various things. It also makes references to fear because Macbeth is engaging in a conversation with the murders (and the main reason why this is happening is because he fears Banquo’s kind and honourable nature will lead himself to be overthrown). Macbeth and Lady Macbeth often mentions nature because they are interested in knowing how other people act accordingly in their situation. • Scene 2: • “We have scotched the snake, not killed it. ” • (Line 13) • An imagery of a predator hunting down a prey. Even though Macbeth at his point has become rather evil, he considers his actions to be justified by the prophecy of the three witches. For Macbeth (thinking that he is a good character), eliminating his opponents is like wounding and killing snakes, which are considered “evil” animals.
