Whatever You Do Three Basic Principles to Live
“Whatever You Do” Three Basic Principles to Live By
Basic Principles to Live By • Without basic godly principles to live by people are out of control (Judges 21: 25; Rom. 1: 18 -32) • With basic godly principles to live by people are in control (Col. 2: 5; 1 Tim. 3: 15)
Do All to the Glory of God • Context: Paul is discussing the proper use of personal liberties (1 Cor. 8 -10) • Paul emphasizes a selfless attitude (8: 13; 9: 19; 10: 24, 33) • Everything we do must bring glory to God (10: 31)
Do All to the Glory of God • Glorifying God is not just words that we say … “Give God the glory” • We glorify God when we please and honor him • We glorify God when we confess wrong (Josh. 7: 19; Jer. 13: 16)
Do All to the Glory of God • We glorify God when we are thankful (Lk. 5: 25; 17: 18; 18: 43) • We glorify God when we die in faith (Jn. 21: 19) • We glorify God when we are obedient (Rom. 4: 20; 2 Cor. 9: 13)
Do All to the Glory of God • We glorify God when we keep our body pure (1 Cor. 6: 19) • We glorify God when we confess Jesus as Lord (Phil. 2: 11) • We glorify God when we are a faithful Christian (1 Pet. 2: 12; 4: 10 -11, 16)
Do All in the Name of the Lord • Context: Paul is discussing the upward calling of the Christian (Col. 3: 1 -4) and the new man (3: 5 -14) • Paul emphasizes a Christ-centered attitude (3: 15 -17) • Everything we do must be done by the Lord’s authority (3: 17)
Do All in the Name of the Lord • Doing something “in the name of” does not mean you say those words • Doing something “in the name of” means doing something “by the authority of” (Acts 3: 6; 4: 10, 18; 5: 40; Jas. 5: 10) • How is Jesus’ authority expressed?
Do All in the Name of the Lord • Expressed in (1 Cor. 16: 1 -2)… Command: so also do you Generic: lay by him in store Specific: first day of the week
Do All in the Name of the Lord • Expressed in approved examples (1 Cor. 11: 1; Phil. 4: 9) • Expressed in implications Cor. 15: 6 -29) • Expressed in patterns (1 Cor. 4: 17; 7: 17; 11: 34; 14: 33; 16: 1) (1
Do All in the Name of the Lord • Not expressed in silence (Acts 15: 24; Rom. 10: 17) • Not expressed outside of scripture (2 Jn. 9 -11)
Work Heartily to the Lord • Context: Paul is discussing domestic responsibilities (Col. 3: 18 -4: 1) • Paul emphasizes a Christ-focused attitude (3: 22 -23) • Everything we do must be done heartily unto the Lord (3: 23)
Work Heartily to the Lord • Lit. out of/from the soul • It comes from within, out of love (Mt. 12: 30; Ex. 21: 5 -6); not forced from without by family, friends, etc. • Put your all into it with diligence (Eccl. 9: 10); not a ritual, lazy, discontented, murmuring, etc.
Whatever You Do… • Three principles: 1) do all to the glory of God, 2) do all in the name of the Lord, and 3) work heartily to the Lord • If you live by these principles you will be a changed person: God-glorifying, NT-authorizing, enthusiasticallyworking
