What were the causes and effects of African migration? DO NOW: What do you know about Africa? HW: How might life in the United States today be affected if well watered areas began to turn into dessert? Due Wednesday April 1 st

Vocabulary �Desertification: process by which fertile or semidessert land becomes dessert �Savanna: a grassy plain in tropical and subtropical regions, with few trees �Bantu Migrations: series of migrations of the Bantu people from the Congo area to present day Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Climate Zones �Sahara Desert, largest desert in the world �Although huge in size, and rough terrain, it was still considered as a huge trade route. �These regions contained salt, gold, iron, copper, oil and diamonds which spurred trade.

Movement between lands �Besides barriers like rainforests, and desserts, migrators also had to deal with enormous coastlines. �The Red Sea, and Indian Ocean were very important as it lead to trade routes with the Middle East and other Asian lands.

Bantu Migration �Scholars have traced African farmers trading from 1000 B. C to 1000 A. D. �These people spoke a variety of languages, that come from one root language… Bantu. �In many regions, this type of trading built empires. �Archaeologists believe that the migration was caused by the development of agriculture, and ceramics of iron.

Kingdom of Nubia �Nubia, also called Kush, is in present day Sudan. �Nubia was taken over by various African Pharaohs. �Nubian rulers moved capital to Meroe. �Meroe commanded Nile trade routes containing goods such as gold, ivory, animal skins, perfumes, and slaves to the Middle East and the Mediterranean. �Highly important in Iron Ore.
