3 POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO A GROWING PROBLEM How do we help so many people that cannot meet their basic needs? What are possible solutions? • Clear and Develop- Do we use the most effect tool of demolition? High risk of resistance, doesn’t solve the issue for those needing the space vs new development. More of a temporary that does not provide a solution to the problem. • Clear and Relocate- A “friendlier” option to outright demolition. Relocating families and social networks inside the location that has already been established. The preference of being closer to current work or possibility of better opportunities outweighs a better built house far out in the country. • Site upgrade- An acknowledgement of the slums and idea to provide public and or communal improvements for the slum to be a legit part of urban city life. Improving water, sanitation, electricity, flood prevention, public phones, mitigation of environmental hazards, rec spaces, health centers, and social capital.

The countries with the most desired resources to offer, have the largest population of people living in poverty. • A standard way to measure poverty is to calculate what percentage of a country’s population lives on less than $2 per day, factoring in purchasing power parity. In three African countries — Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Liberia — more than 90—percent of the population gets by on under $2 per day. • In Nigeria, which is an oil exporter, 84 percent of the population survives on $2 per day. Bangladesh, which clothes the world in cotton, has three quarters of its population living under that barrier. Staying with cotton producers, four West African countries — Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Mali — are among the poorest countries in the world, all with at least three quarters of the population in poverty. Is there hope? Just like we heard about Mokoko, the end game is for each generation to get an education and make a better life. With hard work and hope for every kid that is birthed, these families rely on the success of their children. This could explain the high birth rate in these areas. https: //youtu. be/FEX 3 TIM 3 tc. This cant be happening in America can it? The slums are not just an overseas problem but a global one. This problem also continues to grow and has many faces but some of the same struggles. While in America section 8 housing and food stamps are given out, this does not solve the problem. Just like other countries, large corporations and the government continue to just put band aids on the real problem. Segregation of poverty and race has and will continue to grow for year to come.

Research out this year from Harvard shows that children who moved from poor areas to more affluent areas had higher incomes and better educational achievements than those who stayed in poor areas. Without dramatic changes, today’s children who live in highpoverty areas are going to grow up to be poor, too. Let me show you what we can't see, visible. • • • Safety & violence- Difficulty navigating due to tight pathways, few signs, and structurally unsound Cycle of Poverty- High rates of illness prevent kids from attending school, high drop-out rate due to poor health and family needs, lack of space and basic needs to do homework, lack of address for jobs to gain employment, black market working becomes the only means. Disaster and evictions- poorly constructed shelters with unsafe locations, no land rights led to lack of investment into improving homes, and eviction from the government or landowner. https: //youtu. be/x. Are we headed towards a world of informal urbanization? We must not ignore what

Are we headed towards a world of informal urbanization? We must not ignore what is unseen. We all know it happens and we need to be held accountable. Nothing is wrong with liking the close you have on or the hottest new tech gear. We however need to put pressure on companies that profit from in slaving people that build the products we love. It is not fair to people who suffer from greed of companies and supply demands. We can provide a better life for these individuals by simply using our voice. This is not just an Africa, Chica, India or any other country problem. This is a we as people problem. We let materialistic things dictate our lives and those who are unable to lavish in what we take for granted pay the ultimate price.
