France � Established settlements in Montreal and Quebec. � In the 1560’s Jean Ribault established a settlement on what is today Parris Island called Charlesfort named after King Charles IX. � Ribault left to explore other lands but left thirty men behind to maintain the fort. � Believed they had been forgotten, built a boat and headed back to France. � At sea they ran out of provisions and started to eat their shoes and leather jackets.
�Tried a second settlement called Fort Caroline located in Florida. �Established good relations with the Native Americans who they traded furs with. �Spanish attacked and burned settlement because they thought they were trespassing on their land. �Later would travel along the Mississippi River and claim those lands for France such as Louisiana which was named after their king.

�Disease killed many of the Spanish and caused them to abandon the settlement. �Years later they built Fort San Felipe on the abandoned settlement of Charlesfort. �Attacked by Native Americans and fled to St. Augustine, Florida. �The Spanish returned and built Fort San Marcos on the same spot. �English burned St. Augustine to the ground which caused the Spanish to leave and return to Florida for good.
