What Students are saying about the CDA Training

What Students are saying about the CDA Training • “I feel like I was really expanding on what I learned in the prior ECE classes and that I was putting my knowledge and experience to the test through scenario writing. ” • “I have been waiting to learn about something like the CDA for quite some time. I have always known that I have wanted to be a teacher, but the CDA will give me more opportunities to work as I am reaching that goal. Getting my CDA now will give me a head start on my future career. The CDA program also allows you to truly think about the things you have been learning in the past years of Early Childhood Education. I am so excited to continue working on obtaining my CDA and be better prepared to work in the Educational Field. ” • “Having the opportunity to begin working on earning a CDA is such a fantastic idea. It lets students get a head start on their career. Without having this opportunity in high school there would be a lot less people striving to get their CDA. It’s nice to have a teacher there to encourage and help the student when needed. It allows the student to be aided if the need arises. This opportunity has personally pushed me to be more interested in earning my CDA. Without having a teacher there to help push me to earn it, I most likely would never try and I probably wouldn’t be as interested in obtaining a career working with children. I love having the chance to get started now while I’m in high school, knowing I will finish sooner than if I would have waited until after my high school career. ”

CDA Training The CDA is not just a Utah license, but a National license that can be used anywhere in the nation and you will be to get it.

CDA Pathway How do we help our students get their CDA training and license? How does the CDA Training fit into the ECE pathway?

Child Development Level 1 in the pathway • Showing and Teaching (CD education) mixed with Teaching introductory hands on involvement (experience). involvement – The students get a preparatory taste of the child care training center through instruction, in class child activities, child observations, a group teaching experience, and offering their help anytime that the center is low on ratio numbers. • An ECE 2 section is run during the same time as this course to train and assist the “visiting” CD students.

CDA Portfolio Resources (Only exposing students to these resources but not gathering them until ECE B) *RC I-3 Weekly lesson plan: gathering of ideas to create this *RC II-1(1 -9) Learning Experiences: gathering of ideas to create this *RC III Book bibliography: Recording the stories read at the beginning of class *RC IV-4 How children develop and learn & positive guidance techniques *RC VI-3 Reporting child abuse and neglect Child Development CD Education CDA EDUCATION HOURS 36 CDA EXPERIENCE HOURS 3

ECE A Level 2 in the pathway • Showing and Teaching (ECE education) mixed with more Teaching introductory hands on involvement (experience). involvement – The focus is taking the knowledge of developing children, learned in Child Development, and using it to support the planning for, educating, and caring of children. They also learn to manage a center. – The students spend ½ of the semester in the child care center being trained by an ECE 2 student on the above focus. The other ½ of the semester is spent in class receiving the education material, planning lessons, building a resource file, and observing the children. • Done by splitting the class in half and doing an every other day group rotation. • A very small ECE 2 section is run during the same time as this course to train and assist the “visiting” ECE A students.

CDA Portfolio Resources (Only exposing students to these resources but not gathering them until ECE B) *RC I-2 Weekly Menu *RC I-3 Weekly lesson plan: gathering of ideas to create this *RC II-1(1 -9) Learning Experiences: gathering of ideas to create this *RC III Book bibliography: Recording the stories read at the beginning of class *RC IV-4 How children develop and learn & positive guidance techniques *RC V Record Keeping Forms *RC VI-1 a, b, c Child Care regulating, personnel requirements, and ratios *RC VI-3 Reporting child abuse and neglect CD Education CDA EDUCATION HOURS 47 EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION A CDA EXPERIENCE HOURS 33

ECE B Level 3 in the pathway • Hands on involvement (experience) mixed with a review of involvement Showing and Teaching (ECE education). Teaching – The focus is taking the knowledge of developing children, learned in Child Development and ECE A, and using it to expand on the hands on role of managing a center and supporting, planning for, educating, and caring for children. • The students spend 1 quarter in the child care center under the tutelage of the Center Director, learning how to manage the center, along with teaching, supporting, and caring for the children. The other quarter is spent in class receiving a review of the education material, planning lessons, working on the ECE/CDA portfolio, and observing one individual child. • This is done by splitting the class in half and having a quarterly rotation. • An ECE 2 section is NOT run during the same time as this course. (SIDE NOTE) I would like to see B and 2 performance objectives swapped so that all of the education and training stays in the classroom with the teachers and the hands on experience is done in the center by the center directors. Directors are too busy to do the education and the training. At Layton, we run as if they have been swapped.

ECE 2 (or C for center) Level 4 in the pathway • Hands on involvement (experience) mixed with a review of involvement Showing and Teaching OTHERS (ECE education). – These students have been managed and trained for the past three ECE pathway courses and now it is their turn to do the managing and training. They will be treated as professionals working out in the child care industry and expected to maintain the strict guidelines set by the State Child Care Licensing Standards. These students act as head teachers, but they also take on the role of support teachers as the students from the other pathway courses come in to train and do their teaching experiences. – ECE 2 Enrollment • At our school, this class can be taken multiple times for credit and CDA lab experience hours. • During the class period that ECE B is offered, we do not enroll any ECE 2 students so that they ECE B students can have the opportunity to learn the role of head teacher without being micro-managed by the ECE 2 students. • During the class period that ECE A is offered, we only enroll 4 -5 ECE 2 students so that they can effectively train the ECE A students and provide the opportunity to practice and experience without too many “professionals” interfering. • During the class periods that Child Development is offered, we enroll 8 -10 ECE 2 students to manage the center. If students are absent and we need to meet ratio, we pull from the Child Development students to come in and help.
