Housing for Caregivers � Keep furnishing simple but do not remove familiar objects � A night-light is good to help with disorientation in the night. � A bell or whistle � Pets underfoot cause many accidents
Living Room � Furniture should be have arms and be at good height: not too high not to low � Rugs should be removed due to slipping � Have additional lighting should be installed where reading and special activities happen.
Stairways & Bathroom � Handrails should be installed to help patients mode up and down. � Patients should wear non-slip shoes. � Add a bright colored strip of colored tape to show where the stairs end. � Add “grab bars” to areas near the toilet and bath tub. � Install a bath bench that will help during bathing. � The bottom of the tub should have a non-slip mat added for safety.
Bedroom � Purchase or rent a hospital bed to help protect against night falls. � Consider a portable toilet if the patient cannot walk alone. � Provide an firm arm chair that will help during dressing and changing. � A telephone should be near the patient, while in bed.
