WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
LIONSGATE Our title and opening sequence' distributor is Lionsgate films. This is mainly due to the fact as of November 2013 Lionsgate was renounced as the most commercially successful mini major film and television distribution company I North America, it is also known as being the seventh most profitable movie studio, also Lionsgate is commonly known for its successful horror movies such as all of the notable Saw films and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, so we thought that this distributor was especially suitable for what we were training to aim for in the making of horror film and that they would be very much so interested in the idea of distributing money towards the idea of our concept. Although we used a small budget to complete our opening sequence, if we were to go forward and complete a full feature film from our current idea then we would need a distributor such as Lionsgate to supply higher budgets to pay for high end special effects and a high standard cast. As this film follows the conventions of the paranormal sub-genre then the high quality special effects will be a key aspect of the film.
AUDIENCE To try and draw in a larger audience, which is what Lionsgate can supply, we will need to try and venture into some sort of media convergence by involving world famous music stars to provide the soundtrack for a film. At the same time as it attracts to our larger audience we would have to be wary of our target audience and think about what appeals to them and in our quantitative research and due to the fact of their age we need to try and find a artist to collaborate with who is very current and popular at the exhibition stage of producing our film.
EXHIBITION During the exhibition stage of production we would have to decide how to release our film and due to our distribution company being such a large mini-major company we would be able to release the film straight into a range of cinema chains before distributing it via DVD and again quoting my quantitative research our target audience said that the majority films they watch is via Netlfix so once the film is sold on DVD the film will also be available for viewing via the Netflix application (again showing our media convergence and synergy ability)
REGULATION I feel like the BBFC certificate for our particular film would be a 15 although it could very easily be rated at an 18, I personally feel like this 15 age certificate would be the rating due to the mild swearing, gore, violence, sustained threat and scenes of a torturing nature. The scene begins with the narrative being focused on the fact that they is a somewhat unnatural nature to the lead protagonist suggesting the idea of a paranormal possession and this can be quite unsettling to viewers of young age as they would not be able to understand this, thus making it scarier than anticipated to these viewers, meaning the age certificate should be over 12 but not as high as 18 as people aged 15 upwards will be able to understand that the things happening to the protagonist are unrealistic. So therefore it would be very important for a age certificate to take this into consideration. This age certificate would also be due to the use of gore and violence as this is again unsettling to those younger than 15 as they are seen as incapable to view the film in a unrealistic setting. Mild swearing will also occur in this film therefore this would be another reason for the age certificate to go up, as a child of a young age could possible see this and their parents/guardians don’t want them to hear words like these as they would not want their child to start using them in their everyday dialect.
REGULATION Due to the generic conventions used in my media this will also bring the age certificate to a l 5 as the audience will know that this is clearly a scary film so would therefore bring up the age certificate as scenes of death, gore, tension and possession would be frequently shown throughout the film, therefore the age certificate would need to be brought up. Due to our film being a paranormal horror film, their will be lots of violence and suspense coinciding with a lot of possession and unnatural happening shown a lot throughout, therefore this would be highly inappropriate for younger viewers meaning that the certificate age would need to be brought up.
