What Ive been doing in the last month
What I’ve been doing in the last. . . month • Completed measurements on the LHC – MKI (magnetic kicker injection) with R. Soares, M. Barnes, F. Caspers, E. Metral, Y. Sillanoli • Analysed the data as far as possible at the moment – Derived longitudinal impedance (real/imaginary), driving impedance (real/imaginary), detuning impedance (real only) • Begun simulations of structure using CST particle studio – Only parallel plates for the time being (meshing lossy structures can be problematic) • Reading last years USPAS lectures on “collective effects in beam dynamics” (http: //emetral. web. cern. ch/emetral/ if anyone interested) • Acquired a full set of the schematics for secondary collimators (phase 1/phase 1 with BPM prototype/phase 2 prototype) – Looks to be a lot of detail. Manchester Monday Morning Mega. Meeting – 19/04/10 – H. Day
LHC-MKI – What’s measured • Transmission line, NC pulsed magnet • Has impedance reduction in place and similar length reference pipe connected also (important for deriving imaginary impedance Manchester Monday Morning Mega. Meeting – 19/04/10 – H. Day
Virtual Network Analyser LHC-MKI in vacuum tank Sucoboxes for connecting wire/capacitors Manchester Monday Morning Mega. Meeting – 19/04/10 – H. Day

To be done • MKI • Continue simulations, try and sort out meshing issues and see how close to reality we can get • Try and find a way to derive imaginary detuning impedance -> important for beam dynamics for beam stability/tune shift • Write a summary report when done (may end up being 1 st year transfer report) • Phase 2 collimation studies • Construct model in CST • Check model with A. Bertarelli/A. Dallaccio • Possibility of beam dynamics simulations, will see when further along – get to learn the joys of MAD-X and HEADTAIL • Transfer report • Start writing it • Organise where/when I’ll have the viva (Hywel + who? ). Deadline is the same week as IPAC, so probably needs to be done near the beginning of May • Tacgnol • Possibility of ceiling Manchester Monday Morning Mega. Meeting – 19/04/10 – H. Day
