What is Zoology? Zoology (First semester of Advanced Life Science) Rainier High School Mr. Taylor 14 September 2021
What is Zoology? n n “Zoo” means ‘animal' “ology” means ‘study of’ n n n therefore … Zoology literally means “study of animals” Animals are living things! 14 September 2021
What is Zoology? What does it mean to be a “living thing”? 14 September 2021
What is a “Living Thing”? We will define living with 8 characteristics: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) All organisms are made of cells. Organisms are highly organized. All organisms use energy. All organisms grow and develop. Organisms have a life span. Organisms reproduce themselves. Organisms respond to stimuli. Organisms adapt to their environment. 14 September 2021
Taxonomy & Binomial Nomenclature Taxonomy is the science of naming and classifying organisms 14 September 2021
Binomial Nomenclature n n Binomial Nomenclature= The two names are the genus and the species Uses a standardized format n n Genus- capitalized, species- all lowercase Either italicized or underlined An International Commission controls and okay's new names Felis domesticus or Canis familiaris 14 September 2021
Why use Binomial Nomenclature? n Eliminated confusion over common names: n n Felis concolor is variably called puma, cougar, panther, mountain lion The robin in England is Erithracus rubicola, in the U. S. a robin is Turdus migratoris 14 September 2021
Seven Major Groupings n There are 7 major levels of organization: Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus 14 September 2021 Species Each of these groupings (except Kingdom) can be further sub-divided by adding prefixes such as Super-, Supra-, Infra-, or Sub- in front of the grouping name. For example: Subclass or Superorder
Seven Major Groupings As with Aristotle, groupings are still based on similarities. n The types of similarities are much more standardized: n Structural n Biochemical n Chromosomal (DNA) similarities n 14 September 2021
Definitions n Biological species n n A group of similar organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring. This is a limited definition with several notable exceptions n wolf/dog, wheat/rye, some fish 14 September 2021
What is Zoology? n Our study will consist of n Viruses and Bacteria n Protists n Sponges n Cnidarians/Coelenterates (jellyfish, anemones) n Worms (flat, round, and segmented) n Molluscs (clams, snails, octopus) n Echinoderms (sea stars) n Arthropods (spiders, insects) n Fish n Amphibians n Reptiles n Birds n Mammals 14 September 2021
