What is the relationship between self and society? Self and Society have a very close relationship. Society has customs and regulations, and certain rules that people need to follow. Self also can have these traits and this is why they are similar to each other. Self can contribute to society and society can contribute to self. Self can contribute many things to society like what you believe in and you’re ethnicity. Society can contribute to yourself by teaching you certain sayings, beliefs, etc.

Self Reliance connected to the book Chris Mc. Candless was very self reliant from society by the time he went on the road. When Chris graduated college he gave away all his money and went to live off the grid and on the road. He lived on his own for a couple years and eventually ditched his car and burned his remaining money. Chris Mc. Candless became completely self reliant and lived in the wild. Although he was self reliant from society, he was still unable to survive by himself in the wild.
Quote from a Transcendentalist “Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air” - Ralph Waldo Emerson. Chris would agree with this quote because he left everything behind to go live in the wilderness and be by himself peacefully. Chris wanted to be able to live in the wilderness away from the cities and live without stress.
Was Chris a Transcendentalist? Chris was a transcendentalist because he followed some of the traits of a transcendentalist. Chris cut ties with people and society because he didn’t want to connect with others. A good example of Chris being a transcendentalist is when his car broke down, he just abandoned it and didn’t ask for help because he didn’t want peoples help. Chris also burned all of his money because he didn’t like the government.
Summary of, “Into the Wild” Chris Mc. Candless was a recent high school graduate who wanted to live his life to the fullest on his own in the wilderness. He took his yellow datsun out to take a journey to Alaska. On the way, his car got flooded by a storm so he ditched it and took rides from people to Alaska. He met a lot of great people who gave him gifts to survive in the wild. When he got to Alaska, he went on a trek and found an abandoned bus. He wanted to go back to civilization but when he tried to go back, there was a huge river blocking him from leaving. He died in that bus about a month or 2 later. The message that the book gives is to be grateful for what you have and don’t do things you think you can do but really can’t.
