§ Students will begin to explore the concepts of matter. § Student will carry out an inquiry-based experiment related to the changes in states of matter. § Prior to the experiment a studentcentered discussion will take place about matter occurring in three states solid, liquid, and gas. § Students will also be introduced to the concept of how heating and cooling can change the states of matter. § To explore the concept student will carry out an experiment based on the changes in states of matter.

§ § 1. 2. 3. 4. First Half of Experiment To carry out the experiment, students will begin by filling cans with ice and salt. Following, students will carry out the listed procedures: Completely dry one can with a paper towel Generously, add 3 teaspoons of salt to the can, at the half way mark, fill the can with ice Generously, add 3 more teaspoons of salt Add another helping of ice and another 3 teaspoons of salt Second Half of Experiment 5. Make sure the can is stable, stir with a sturdy spoon for 60 seconds 6. Stop stirring, remove spoon, observe the outside appearance of the can 7. Wait for 5 minutes. During the wait students will answer one or two of their critical thinking questions. 8. Observe the outside of the can for any changes (From Gas to Liquid to Solid, 2016)

§ What changes were noticed about the outside of the can? § Why do you think there was frost on one part of the can and water on another part? § Explain how water vapor in the air surrounding the can became frost.

§ As students are carrying out the experiment they will make notes of their observation on a shared google form. § They will also make responses to each other concerning their thoughts in regards to the experiment.
