What is the Main Idea? Main Idea-A statement that tells the author’s point about the topic. The main idea provides the message of a given paragraph or the argument that is being made about the topic.
For example: The rain forest is home to many creatures. Monkeys, toucans and macaws live in the rain forest. Blue Morpho butterflies and anteaters also live in the rain forest. The main idea-The rain forest is home to many creatures
How to find the Main Idea? �Ask yourself the question: What is the overall message or argument being made by the author about the topic of this paragraph?
�Summarize the Passage After you've read the passage, summarize it in one sentence that includes the gist of ever idea from the paragraph. A good way to do this is to pretend you have just ten words to tell someone what the passage was about. You'd have to think broadly, so you could included every detail in just a short statement.
