BIOTECHNOLOGY! How would you define BIOTECHNOLOGY?

BIOTECHNOLOGYthe use of LIVING organisms to SOLVE problems & make USEFUL products.

Which sciences do you think would use the most BIOTECHNOLOGY? 1. ARCHAEOLOGY (artifacts, ruins) 2. MEDICINE (health, surgery) 3. PHARMACOLOGY (drugs) 4. AGRICULTURE (farming, crops) 5. ASTRONOMY (stars) 6. PHYSICS (matter, motion, space, time)

Let’s understand 4 WAYS BIOTECHNOLOGY is used today!

1. MEDICAL BIOTECHNOLOGY:

Medical biotechnology replaces or extends the life of our organs!

How do you think pharmacists use BIOTECHNOLOGY? 1. ARCHAEOLOGY (artifacts, ruins) 2. MEDICINE (health, surgery) 3. PHARMACOLOGY (drugs) 4. AGRICULTURE (farming, crops) 5. ASTRONOMY (stars) 6. CHEMISTRY (matter, reactions)

2. DRUG BIOTECHNOLOGY PHARMACY BIOTECHNOLOGY

GENETICS… ANTIBIOTICS have been a great BIOTECHNOLOGY CURE!

In the middle of the 1900’s, we had to get diabetes INSULIN from RABBITS! Even if the rabbits were BIG, we still could not make enough.

Pharmacy biotechnology found a way to turn BACTERIA into INSULIN makers!!

by replacing the DNA in a harmless BACTERIA with the HUMAN INSULIN gene!

by replacing the DNA in a harmless bacteria with the HUMAN INSULIN gene! We can make a LOT of insulin more quickly because bacteria with this new insulin gene reproduce so quickly!

PHARMACY BIOTECHNOLOGY finds NEW ways to DEVELOP & DELIVER LIFE-SAVING MEDICATIONS & THERAPIES!

We are just beginning to understand the possibilities of manipulating DNA. { THAT’S BIOTECHNOLGY! CRISPR!!! https: //www. cnn. com/2015/10/30/health/pioneers-crispr-dnagenome-editing/index. html
