What is STEM Showcase? STEM = Science Technology Engineering Mathematics STEM Showcase = Woodland Science Fair Wednesday, February 1 st at the Math and Science Night
STEM Showcase Categories • Scientific Practices • Inventions (Engineering) • Technology • Reverse Engineering
Scientific Practices
What do you need for Scientific practices? • Science Experiment • Journal • Oral presentation of board and experiment • Presentation skills
Science experiments need to be based on a testable question: • "How does changing ___________(manipulated variable) affect the _____________? (responding variable) • Example: "Does changing the shape of the paper airplane wing affect the flight of a plane? "
What is an Inventions project? -Inventions show an understanding of how nature works -An invention project creates something that has never been made before or improves on existing designs
What do you need for an Invention project? • Invention • Journal • Presentation Board • Oral Presentation • Model/Prototype
What is a technology project? • Create and/or design a project using computer technology.
What do you need for a technology project? • Technology • Electronic presentation (display on own device) • Oral Presentation
Technology projects can be: Programming/Coding (Scratch. org, code. org, Khan Academy)
Technology projects can be: Architectural/ Engineering Designs (Blender, Tinkercad)
Technology projects can be: Digital Storytelling
Technology projects can be: Microsoft Movie Maker, i. Movie, etc.
What is Reverse Engineering? The process of disassembling a mechanical device to discover its function and operation.
Reverse engineering projects need a Mounted Display • Parts and pieces of both assembly AND sub-assembly • Mounted • Labeled • Explained • Working Journal
Most projects need a working Journal IS Is NOT Rough draft Published Perfection Misspelled words Always clean Crossed out Erased Dated Daily Entries/Diary Done after the fact A spiral or composition notebook Typed set of pages
All projects need an oral presentation • Oral presentation of content (includes board and experiment) • Presentation skills
