What is smallpox • Smallpox is a serious, contagious and sometimes fatal disease. • There is no specific treatment for smallpox, and the only prevention is vaccination. • The name smallpox is derived from the latin word “spotted” and refers to the raised bumps that appear on the face and body of an infected person.

Edward Jenner and Small pox • Edward Jenner was an English country doctor who pioneered vaccination. Jenner's discovery in 1796 that inoculation with cowpox gave immunity to smallpox, was an immense medical breakthrough and has saved countless lives.
