Science and the Natural World Thinking Like a Scientist: Observing Ask questions like: What? How? Why?

Science and the Natural World Chimp Diet in May Like all animals, chimps prefer to eat certain foods when they are available. How would you design a bar graph to show this information?

Science and the Natural World Thinking Like a Scientist: Classifying By classifying the information related to a chimp’s resting, climbing, or feeding, a scientist can better understand chimp behavior. Use the chart to classify the details from the field notes.

Science and the Natural World Making Models This model shows Jomeo’s movements and behaviors during one day. Use the map to answer the questions.

Thinking Like a Scientist Scientific Attitudes Discuss and summarize each scientific attitude.

Thinking Like a Scientist Scientific Reasoning Decide whether the conclusions are reached by objective reasoning or subjective reasoning.

Thinking Like a Scientist Faulty Reasoning Lines of symmetry on a square and rectangle.

Measurement—A Common Language SI Prefixes SI units are similar to our money units, in which a dime is ten times more than a penny. Name the example for each of the SI Prefixes.

Measurement—A Common Language Some SI Units of Measure

Measurement—A Common Language Compare and Contrast Name the similarities and differences of mass and weight.

Measurement—A Common Language Volume of Liquids Measuring the volume of liquids and rectangular solids requires different methods.

Measurement—A Common Language Densities of Some Common Substances Knowing the density of an object helps you predict how it will float and identify what it is made of.

Measurement—A Common Language Temperature Scales Zero on the Kelvin scale (0 K) is the coldest possible temperature. It is called absolute zero. What is the boiling point and what is the freezing point on the Celsius thermometer?

Mathematics and Science Accuracy and Precision In a game of darts, accurate throws land close to the bull’s eye. Precise throws land close to one another. Where would darts land in the situations described on boards C and D?

Mathematics and Science Significant Figures Suppose you are tiling a bathroom. You might estimate that the tile is 5. 3 cm long. The measurement 5. 3 cm has two significant figures, or sig figs. You are certain of the 5, but you have estimated the 3.

Mathematics and Science Percent Error The experimental density of copper is 9. 37 g/cm 3. The true value is 8. 92 g/cm 3. To calculate the percent error, use the following formula and substitute. The percent error in the calculation of the density of copper was 5. 04%.

Mathematics and Science Hognose Snake Egg Data We can use math to analyze the data in the table about the number of hognose snake eggs in seven nests.

Mathematics and Science Collected Data What might be an unknown variable that could have affected data?

Mathematics and Science Think Like a Scientist How and why are the number of sea turtle nests in Florida changing?

Graphs in Science A Line Graph This line graph plots the data from the table.

Graphs in Science Panda Growth Panda cubs grow quickly in their first few months of life.

Graphs in Science Linear Trends Data plotted in a line graph may show a trend. Is the graph linear or nonlinear? What is the graph’s trend?

Graphs in Science Data Variation Even though some points do not fall on the line, this graph shows a trend. What is the anomalous data point?

Graphs in Science Distance Biked This graph shows the distance two friends biked in one hour.

Scientific Inquiry Developing a Hypothesis Offer two hypotheses for why the student's digital music player stopped working.

Scientific Inquiry Design and Conduct an Experiment Identify the independent variable, the dependent variable and the other two variables in this experiment. Think about a hypothesis for this experiment.

Scientific Inquiry Collecting and Interpreting Data A data table helps you organize the information you collect in an experiment. Graphing the data may reveal any patterns in your data.

Scientific Inquiry Drawing Conclusions Sometimes the same experiment can have very different data.
