What is prayer? Prayer is communicating with God—while you talk, God listens and while God talks, you listen. Did you know that God always answers prayers when we pray for spiritual protection from temptation and sin?
David and Goliath 1 Samuel 17: 32 -50
GOLIATH The Israelites were gathered together to be at war against the Philistines. Both nations were camped on both hilltops across the valley from the other. A mighty warrior from the Philistine army named Goliath came forth. He was about nine feet tall. He wore on heavy battle gear. He told the Israelites that he wanted to fight them. King Saul and the Israelite army was afraid. Goliath did this for 40 days. 9 feet tall
David was a shepherd boy who use take food to his older brothers who were in the Israel camp. The Israelites were very afraid of Goliath. One day when David was delivering the food to his brothers, he overheard Goliath threatening to overtake Israel. Goliath was also saying bad things against God.
David asked the soldiers near him, who is this soldier making such comments, especially against God? The soldier told him it was Goliath of the Philistines. The soldiers told him that anyone who killed Goliath could marry the king's daughter as a reward. King Saul learned of David's comments where he asked "who is making comments against God, " so he sent for him.
When David was in King Saul's presence, he told him that he would fight Goliath. King Saul was surprised and doubted that he could beat a warrior like Goliath.
David was confident in God's ability to help him. He told King Saul that he was a shepherd and with God's power, he fought off lions and bears before they hurt the sheep. David always prayed for God’s protection. He was confident that God would help him overtake Goliath too.
King Saul was impressed with David's confidence in God. He wishes him well in his battle. King Saul dressed David in military clothes. David told King Saul that he couldn't go to war dressed like that, so he took off the military clothes.
David picked up his wooden staff and went to the stream near where Goliath was standing. He picked up 5 smooth stones and put them in his shepherd's bag. When Goliath saw David, he didn't take him seriously. In fact he was insulted that King Saul sent such a young boy to fight him. Goliath said to David, "What am I? A dog? Do you really think you're going to beat me with sticks? "
David prayed for God’s protection in his heart as he said to Goliath, "you fight against me with a sword, but I fight against you in the name of God. " David knew if he prayed and asked God to help him defeat Goliath, God would help him.
Goliath advanced David took out a stone from his bag, put it into his wooden sling, and slung it at Goliath. The stone his Goliath in his face and he fell to the ground. David won the fight against Goliath.
What is prayer? Prayer is communicating with God—while you talk, God listens and while God talks, you listen. In today’s story, David prayed for protection against Goliath. God always answers prayers when we pray for spiritual protection from temptation and sin. Just like David prayed for protection, we too can pray to God and ask us for protection.
