What is prayer? Prayer is communicating with God—while you talk, God listens and while God talks, you listen. Did you know that God always answers prayers when you pray for the needs of others?

Samuel As A Prophet 1 Samuel 9 -16

This is Samuel. He is a prophet. A prophet is a messenger from God. A prophet is responsible for praying for people, giving messages to people from God anointing kings.

The people of Israel asked Samuel to pray for them to ask God for a king. Samuel agreed to pray on their behalf and ask God for the king, but he also told them they the king would be their ruler and they would be expected to follow the rules of the king. After Samuel told the people what God said, they still insisted on having a king. So, God told Samuel that He was going to give the people what they asked for.

There was a handsome man from the tribe of Benjamin. His name was Saul's dad had alot of donkeys. Some of the donkeys were lost. Saul's dad sent him to look for the donkeys.

While Saul was in Ramah, he ran into Samuel. God told Samuel to anoint Saul's head with oil. Once Saul's head was anointed, he was the new king of Israel.

When Samuel brought King Saul to the Israelites, they were pleased with the new king.

God told Samuel to tell King Saul to fight against the Amakelites and to kill all of the people and animals. King Saul fought against the Amakelites, however, he didn't kill their king. God told Samuel that King Saul did not kill ALL of the Amakelites. Samuel talked to King Saul and told him that he would be removed as king because he disobeyed God.

God then told Samuel he is going to replace King Saul with a new king. God instructed Samuel to go to Bethlehem and find the residence of Jesse.

When Samuel gets to Jesse's house, he told him that God chose one of his sons to be the next king.

Jesse brings out all of his sons for Samuel. But Samuel told him God hadn't chosen any of them. Then he asked if Samuel had another son?

Jesse sends for David, the son who takes care of the sheep. When Samuel sees David, he said, "this is the one God has chosen. " Samuel anointed David to be the next king of Israel.

Prayer is communicating with God—while you talk, God listens and while God talks, you listen. In today’s story, God used a prophet named Samuel to pray for the people, speak to people on God’s behalf and anoint kings. Samuel prayed to God asking for a king for Israel. When the king was present, Samuel spoke to the king on God’s behalf. When both kings were chosen by God, Samuel anointed them both. God used Samuel to meet the needs of others. Like Samuel, God can use us to meet the needs of others.
