What is Orienteering? • Orienteering is a challenging outdoor activity using a COMPASS and a detailed TOPOGRAPHIC MAP to through a series of checkpoints called CONTROLS as quickly as you can. • IT IS A RACE!!!! • It is extremely popular around the world

History of Orienteering • 1919 - Major ERNST KILLANDER of Sweden devised a cross-country competition where runners not only ran a course but had to choose there own routes using a map and compass. • Considered the Father of Orienteering

History of Orienteering 1941 -1943 - Orienteering events were held at Dartmouth College- **First events in Uniited States. 1961 - The International Orienteering Federation was formed 1966 - The US Military Academy at West Point began intramural orienteering competitions. 1988 - Orienteering was recognized by Olympic Committee as a Class C sport Currently there are over 60 major Orienteering clubs in the United States

Orienteering here at NP High School • Due to the fact that we do not have maps of our school grounds we will be doing a modified form of orienteering called “Fixed Point Orienteering” • • We will teach you how to read a compass We will teach you how to pace We wil teach you how to do a triangle walk We will have you navigate for time 5 different fixed point courses using different controls
