Who are The Clewer Initiative? • The Clewer Initiative is a Church of England project, helping dioceses to raise awareness of modern slavery and provide support and care to the victims • We believe that the tools to end modern slavery already exist within the local community. • We’re working individually with dioceses across England, supporting them as they explore how they could help end modern slavery in their area • www. theclewerinitiative. org
Modern Slavery Definition From the Modern Slavery Act 2015: 1. Modern Slavery: encompasses slavery, human trafficking, servitude, forced or compulsory labour. 2. Traffickers and slave masters use whatever means they have at their disposal to coerce, deceive and force individuals into a life of abuse, servitude and inhumane treatment
At least 11, 000 – 13, 000 victims in the UK* *But one recent report gave 136, 000 as their estimate

The Rooney case: key features • • • Preying on the homeless and vulnerable Forced to work as manual labourers for no pay Lived in squalid conditions Often beaten, and kept in a constant state of fear Controlled with alcohol and cigarettes “We will not rest on this result as there are potentially other victims of modern slavery in our county…The victims will never get the years back that were taken away from them but I hope this provides them with some comfort that justice has been served. ” Ch Supt Chris Davison, head of crime at Lincolnshire police
What does modern slavery look like? • Victims can be of any age, race, or gender • There is no ‘typical’ victim • However, there are physical and behavioural indicators that may mean someone is being exploited • Full list of signs available from The Clewer Initiative website
Spotting the signs • • • Avoid eye contact Fear of police Living in dirty & overcrowded accommodation Appear unfamiliar with their neighbourhood Show signs of physical abuse & untreated injuries Look malnourished or unkempt Wear no safety equipment even for dangerous work Seem under the control or influence of others Rarely allowed to travel on their own Have no control of their ID or their passport
What can we do? • • Learn to spot the signs Report our suspicions and concerns ‘Slavery-proof’ our church projects Think about where we buy from, are we putting price before people?
