What is Mindfulness? R Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment and becoming more aware of thoughts and feelings. It also helps us to let go of thoughts and feelings that cause us anxiety.
Are you always worrying about something in the past or future? It is important to take time to enjoy the present moment.
The benefits of mindfulness Regular practice of mindfulness helps people to reflect on their thoughts and emotions. It improves our ability to focus our attention. It can stop us reacting to situations. It can improve our self-esteem and wellbeing. It reduces anxiety, depression, stress and sleep problems.
Evidence One study looked at the effects of practising mindfulness on the brain. They found that practising mindfulness for half an hour a day for 8 weeks changed the participants’ brains. They had increased grey matter in the parts of the brain related to self-awareness, compassion and self-reflection.
Evidence Another study found that mindfulness could reduce stress and improve immune function after only 8 weeks.
Still not convinced? • Greeson (2009) reviewed the results of 52 studies on mindfulness selected on the basis of their scientific rigour. • He concluded that mindfulness induced more positive states of mind, reduced stress hormones, improved immunity and helped people develop more healthy behaviours in terms of eating, sleeping and substance use.
