What is Matter? Solids, Liquids, and Gases

What is matter? • Matter is anything that takes up space and has weight.

What is matter? • Matter is anything that takes up space and has weight. • Matter is made up of tiny particles called molecules. • Matter has three states.

What are matter’s 3 states? • Solid • Liquid • Gas

What are matter’s 3 states? • Solid • Liquid • Gas

Molecules • All matter is made up of molecules. • Molecules are atoms bundled

Molecules • All matter is made up of molecules. • Molecules are atoms bundled together. • The molecules are attracted to each other. Some particles are attracted strongly to each other and others weakly. • The molecules move around, depending on their state, some matter moves faster than others.

Properties of Matter • How It Looks (Shiny , Dull, Color, etc. ) •

Properties of Matter • How It Looks (Shiny , Dull, Color, etc. ) • How It Feels (Hard, Soft, Rough , Smooth, etc. ) • How It Smells (Sweet, Sharp, Terrible, No Smell, etc. ) • How It Sounds (Loud, Soft, Echo, No Sound, etc. ) • What It Does (Bounce, Stretch, Tear, Break, Magnetism etc. )

What is a solid? • • Solids take up space and has mass. Solids

What is a solid? • • Solids take up space and has mass. Solids have a shape of their own. Solids can be described by their physical properties. Solids can be measured.

What is a liquid? • • Liquids take up space and have mass. Liquids

What is a liquid? • • Liquids take up space and have mass. Liquids do not have a shape of their own. Liquids take the shape of their container. Liquids can be measured (mass and volume).

What is a gas? • A gas takes up space and has mass. •

What is a gas? • A gas takes up space and has mass. • A gas takes the shape of its container. • A gas is the only kind of matter that always fills all the space inside a container. • The mass of a gas can be measured.

Physical Changes A Physical change is a change in how matter looks, but not

Physical Changes A Physical change is a change in how matter looks, but not the kind of matter is it is. • Tear • Cut • Folded • Written • Liquid • Solid • Gas • Mixture • Solution
