What Is History? • History is the study of the past, through primary and secondary artifacts and fossils.
Why Study History? • Knowing one’s past helps with the problems of today. • Studying our history helps us know more about ourselves, others around us, and varying places.

Types of Evidence • Artifacts- a MAN-MADE object from the past • Primary source: was written, photographed, or recorded who was present at the event. • Secondary source: was recorded by someone who was not there but HEARD about the event.
Primary Source Checklist • Created at the time of an event • Often one of a kind, or rare • EXAMPLES: diaries, letters, photographs, art, maps, video, interviews, soundrecordings
Secondary Source Checklist • Created after event, usually a long time after • Often uses primary sources as examples • Expresses an opinion or an argument, usually • EXAMPLES: history books, biographies, art, music recordings, movies
Types of Evidence • Fossil- a living thing from the past that is now preserved in stone or as bones.
