What is Health? ? ? • Elements: Combination of your physical, mental/emotional/spiritual, and social wellbeing • NOT AN ABSOLUTE STATE • Health is striving to be the best you can at any time focusing on what behaviors you have control over – “If you don’t take care of your body…where are you going to live? ”
Health Continued • Physical- The way the parts and system of your body work • Mental/Emotional/Spiritual- Your feelings about yourself, how ell you relate to others, and how well you meet the demands of daily life (state of mind) • Social- The way you interact/get along with others
Health Continued • To be healthy you need to keep all element in balance (like an equilateral triangle). – In your notebook, list 3 examples/behaviors of how one would maintain their physical, mental, and social health. • Wellness- state of well -being; person with a balanced life/health (total health) • On going and life long commitment to 3 elements of health • Can be thought of as a continuum (it fluctuates and changes)
Influences on your Health • Heredity- Traits passed on from parents to kids (Ex. Hair color, eye color, shape of ears/nose) • Physical Environment- Sum of your surroundings (Clean, safe, air quality, access to med care) • Social Environment (Family and people around you, peers are important) • Cultural Environment (beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group) • Behavior- What you do or don’t do – YOU HAVE THE MOST CONTROL OVER! – The behaviors and decisions you make today will affect your health tomorrow. – How you behave and act not only affects you but it also affects the people around you.
Lifestyle Factors • Lifestyle Factors- personal behaviors and habits related to the way a person lives that determines his/her level of health – 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Make a difference in a person’s overall health, happiness, and longevity of life. Get 7 -8 Hours of sleep per night Eat nutritious foods from each food group everyday NO smoking or tobacco products Eat breakfast 20 -30 Minutes of exercise 3 times per week No Alcohol or other drugs Maintain recommended weight
Prevention • Practicing healthy habits to keep a person well and free from disease and other illnesses. – Wear seat belts – Apply sun screen – Avoid unsafe areas – Wear protective/safety gear for sports
Protective Factors • Positive Role Models • Positive Values • Choosing Abstinence– Responsible teens, who value their health are choosing abstinence from sexual activity before marriage and other high risk behaviors such as using tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs
Consequences- Every choice/action has a consequence. It can be positive or negative . 1. Physical- how it affects your body 1. (-) smoking leads to cancer, smoker’s cough 2. Guidelines for Making a Responsible Decision • Evaluate the possible results of each decision. Will this decision result in an action that: – – – Is Healthful? Is Safe? Is Legal? Shows respect for myself and others? Follows the guidelines of a responsible adult (parents/guardians)? – Demonstrates good character?
Purpose of Health Education • Provide accurate health information in such a way to influence people to change attitudes so that they take positive action about their health. • Goal- help people live long, zestful, and productive lives. • Goal- give tools needed to maintain total health/well being • Goal- gain health literacy – Health Literacy- an individual’s capacity to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services and use such information and services to promote his/health/wellness
