What is happening in Syria? According to USAID Syria is facing the most difficult humanitarian crisis of our times due to 17 million Syrians, 2/3 rds their population, are in need of assistance. There also 6. 1 million refugees displaced within Syria and 4. 8 million Syrians in neighboring countries. Of those forced to leaver their homes around half of them are children. USAID has given nearly $3 billion in aid of the Syrian people since the start of the conflict¹. How is it affecting the United States? Senator Kerry has made efforts to admit more refugees. Schake, a researcher for the Hoover Institute of Stanford, acknowledged that the countries taking in Syria refugees are creating future problems within their countries but will also enjoy of the advantages of diversity like the United States has enjoyed for so many years₅. Angela Naimou, a professor at Clemson University, says that many times these refugees are faced with violence by the countries that are forced to let them in because they feel they cannot accommodate them₆. Naimou says believes that these people sometimes are not trusted because sterotypes have been place on them saying that they are terrorists and should not be allowed in their countries₆. justifiable pride at looking difficulties in the face and choosing to be a society that lifts its lantern to the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses yearning to breathe free. ” -Kori N. Schake₅ 2016. Senator Kerry in his report also mentioned that they were able to keep up an extensive screening process while admitting all of those refugees into America. There are supporters who believe that the United States should be doing more including Kori N. Schake believes that we need to stick to what we have always done and provide more help to the refugees in need. She said, “Most important of those advantages [allowing refugees into America] is the justifiable pride at looking difficulties in the face and choosing to be a society that lifts its lantern to the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses yearning to breathe free. ₅” What is being done to improve the aid of the refugees? There are many supporters within the United States who are trying to accommodate more refugees. Clea Mc. Nelly and Lyn Morland have researched into communities that are getting the most of their resources in order to maximize how many refugees they can see. They explain how the key to success in these communities, i. e. Philadelphia, is communications and having a plan³. There are many agencies that are trying to find a solution and help as many people as possible in this Syrian refugee crisis working. There agencies within the United States and also in the Middle East provide shelter, food, clean water, and medical attention to provide aid to the refugees. It is estimated that they have provided nearly $6 billion since the start of the crisis in 2011₁. Some of these organizations are: • UNHCR • USAID • UNICEF • World Vision • Global Giving Refugee Relief Fund • Syrian Refugee Relief Fund • Islamic Relief • UNFPA • WHO
